U.S. import tariffs on steel and aluminum products (2026)
Steel, aluminum and copper articles, and a long list of derivative products, pay the Section 232 metals tariff on their full customs value (HTSUS U.S. note 16). Most articles pay 50%; listed derivative products such as some appliances pay 25%. Goods from the United Kingdom pay lower rates.
USMCA does not exempt goods from the Section 232 metals tariff. Goods that pay it are exempt from the forced-labor tariff.

What drives these rates
- For goods outside chapters 72–76, the metals tariff applies only if the metal is at least 15% of the article's weight. Goods made from U.S.-melted and poured metal may qualify for a lower rate.
- Not every steel or aluminum article is listed. Aluminum cookware (7615.10.71) and other articles of iron or steel (7326.90.86), for example, pay the forced-labor tariff instead.
- Many steel and aluminum goods from China also pay Section 301, for example 25% on steel bolts, structures and refrigerators and 7.5% on aluminum doors and windows.
- Auto parts and vehicles that pay the Section 232 auto tariff do not also pay the metals tariff.
