U.S. import tariffs on furniture (2026)

Most furniture in HTS chapter 94 has a Free base rate, so what an importer pays is driven almost entirely by the extra tariff layers: Section 232 on certain wood products, Section 301 on goods from China, and the 2026 Section 301 forced-labor tariff.

Since October 2025, upholstered seats with wooden frames and wooden kitchen cabinets and vanities carry a Section 232 tariff. Other wooden furniture, metal furniture and mattresses are not covered by it.

What drives these rates

  • Upholstered wooden-frame seats (statistical suffixes .11 and .31 of 9401.61.40 and 9401.61.60) pay a 25% Section 232 tariff (HTSUS 9903.76.02). Goods from the EU, Japan, Korea and Taiwan pay a 15% combined rate; the United Kingdom pays 10%.
  • Wooden kitchen cabinets and vanities (for example 9403.40.90.60) pay the same Section 232 rates, but only when the goods really are kitchen cabinets or vanities. The calculator flags these codes instead of adding the tariff automatically.
  • Softwood timber and lumber pays a 10% Section 232 tariff from every country, including Canada and Mexico.
  • Goods that pay a Section 232 tariff are exempt from the forced-labor tariff.
  • Most furniture from China also pays the Section 301 tariff (25% on List 3 codes, 7.5% on List 4A codes).
  • Furniture that qualifies under USMCA enters from Mexico duty-free unless a Section 232 tariff applies. From Canada, many seating and furniture codes in headings 9401 and 9403 pay a 50% Section 338 tariff (HTSUS U.S. note 51), even when they qualify under USMCA.
