U.S. import tariffs on home appliances and power tools (2026)

Major home appliances, including refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, ranges and window air conditioners, are on the Section 232 steel derivative list. They pay 25% of the full customs value from every country, including Mexico, Canada and Korea, plus Section 301 when made in China.

Small appliances and power tools are not on that list. They pay the base duty and the forced-labor tariff instead, and some pay Section 301 from China.

What drives these rates

  • The Section 232 derivative tariff applies to goods outside chapters 72–76 only if steel or aluminum is at least 15% of the article's weight. Goods made from U.S.-melted and poured metal may qualify for a lower rate.
  • Appliances that pay the Section 232 tariff are exempt from the forced-labor tariff. USMCA and KORUS do not exempt them from Section 232.
  • From China, refrigerators, ranges, air conditioners and vacuums also pay 25% under Section 301 List 3; washing machines, dishwashers and coffee makers pay 7.5% (List 4A).
  • Small appliances from Korea that qualify under KORUS pay only part of the forced-labor tariff, because it is reduced by the general duty rate.
